Dear
Faculty and Staff of the Cal Community:
The past year has drawn on our support and caring for our global community to an unprecedented degree. The tsunami in Southeast Asia, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, devastating mudslides in Guatemala and earthquake in the Kashmir region all called on us to support those ravaged by these terrible natural disasters. In its fine tradition of public service, the UC Berkeley community offered its support with alacrity, compassion and generosity.
Now, as we approach the holiday season, we ask you to reach out to our local communities, to our neighbors and fellow citizens who need our support. I am continually amazed at the wonderful efforts of community service and engagement that I see at Berkeley. We have over 200 partnerships with the City of Berkeley and the surrounding communities. It is truly inspiring that so many of our students make public service part of their experience on campus, encouraged by the example of our faculty and staff.
Once again this year, to enter into the Berkeley spirit of engagement that I have seen so well exemplified, we are incorporating a Season of Caring - Campus Charitable Campaign which will take place the second week of December. Donation of food, toys, and gifts will be accepted as well as pledges to charities of your choice. Also, departments around campus are saying thanks with drawings of free tickets, discounts and other prizes.
I encourage you to participate in the Season of Caring. Connecting through helping others and sharing our good fortune of being part of this wonderful educational community is a vital part of the Berkeley experience.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau
