About the 2005 winner

Gustavo Huber

A fourth-year architecture student in the spring of 2005, Gustavo Huber is a native of San Diego, and more recently from Port Townsend, Wash. His prize-winning color photography contrasts natural and man-made design and form. Gustavo became interested in photography in high school, when he discovered a darkroom being used more for storage than printing and felt an “obligation and addiction” to restoring it and putting it to use. After a post-graduation year to explore and enjoy the Bay Area, he hopes to attend the University of Washington for graduate study.

About the 2005 Second Place winners

Cindy Solis

Cindy Solis was a senior majoring in Independent Studies in the Field when she received her second place award for the Lyon Prize. Her entry, on women in advertising, is a collection of mock ads, shining a light on changing perceptions of women. As a Lyon Prize reviewer noted, “Lots of thought went into her project, as well as a lot of theater…. This is just fun.”

Daniel Yaffe

A senior majoring in development studies at the time of his award, Daniel Yaffe is from San Diego. He became interested in photography at 13, when his father gave him his first real camera and showed him how to use it on the Southern California bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. Daniel has “a strong sense of connectedness with the subjects,” said a Lyon Prize judge of his photos of Ghanaian children. “He has a deliberate seeing that brings your eyes into the faces of the children and makes you want to know more about them.” After graduation, Daniel’s plan was to “pick up my camera and go somewhere,” striving “to make my time meaningful, while still pursuing my passions.”
