Regents Meeting

Three actions involving the Berkeley campus were taken by the UC Board of Regents at its meeting Friday, Nov. 18. The board approved the following:

* The appointment of Leroy Bean as acting vice chancellor for business and administrative services through June 30 or until the appointment of a new vice chancellor, whichever date is earlier.

* The use of income from the Indo-American Community Chair in India Studies for an additional three years for support of distinguished visiting professorships.

* The naming of the area east of the Hellman Tennis Complex as Tom Stow Plaza. Thomas Stow is a former Berkeley tennis player and coach.

Garff Wilson to Read A Christmas Carol

God bless us, everyone. And blessed we are, for Garff Wilson will again give his annual reading of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

Wilson, professor emeritus and former director of public ceremonies, will present the Dickens' story Dec. 7 at 3:30 pm in Alumni House. Refreshments will be supplied and admission is free.

The first reading by Wilson in 1962 was initiated when students in the ASUC approached him to perform for their Christmas party. He was an instant hit and the performance has been repeated each year since.

Toys Needed for Tots

A Toys-for-Tots collection barrel has been set up in 25 Callaghan Hall, the campus ROTC center, to receive donations of unwrapped toys through Dec. 13.

Toys for Tots is sponsored by the US Marine Corps Reserve each year to bring toys to disadvantaged children across the nation. For more information on the campus program, contact Sgt. Leroy Sumter at 642-3551.

Another Holiday Drive

The Berkeley Staff Assembly's annual holiday toy and food drive is underway again this year, with participation from a number of staff organizations, including LeGACY and APASA.

Collection boxes will be placed at University Hall, Sproul Hall, Wurster, Giannini, and the ASUC. Items will be collected through Dec. 15.

Training to Assist Students in Crisis

In response to staff requests, a series of workshops will be held spring semester to train staff in identifying and assisting students in crisis.

Workshops are sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Affairs and the Vice Chancellor's Administrative Council to help participants develop and improve their skills for:

* Recognizing students in crisis.

* Providing immediate help.

* Knowing where to refer students who appear in need of counseling or other emergency assistance.

Coordinated by University Health Services, the workshops will cover staff roles and responsibilities, communication skills, major issues for students, crisis-response skills, campus resources, and personal caretaking skills.

Units participating from University Health Services include Counseling and Psychological Services and Health Promotion.

Training will be given in three four-hour sessions designed for staff who work directly with students a majority of time.

Workshop dates have not yet been set, but will be announced Dec. 1 in a memo to deans and directors. For more information, call Health Promotion at 642-7202.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Conference at UCSB

The seventh UC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Association Conference will be held Feb. 17 to 19 at UC Santa Barbara. The event is open to all staff, faculty, and students.

Dependent Care Needs Your Summer Programs

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care needs notification of your summer programs offered on campus for a list it is compiling.

Sponsors of programs of all kinds --from sports to math--are encouraged to send information to the committee at 3100 Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. Or fax it to 642-7411. Via e-mail, the address is careserv@uclink2.

Include a program description, dates and times, age range, price and financial assistance details, registration dates, a phone number to call for more information, and any special requirements.

The committee hopes to have the list ready by February so parents have time to plan for the summer.

Big Insects Up Close

Lawrence Hall of Science is ready to take the "ugh" out of "bug" with its spring exhibition, "Insects Up Close," which opens Jan. 14.

The exhibition will feature giant robotic insects large enough to tower over visitors, who will also be able to view live displays of everything from crickets and beetles to painted ladies and mosquito larvae.

Rare insect collections will be on hand from the UC Essig Museum. Berkeley research will be featured on lyme disease, Africanized bees, insect locomotion, and other topics.

For details, call 642-5132.

Cal Takes Big Game From Stanford by a Point

The 97th Big Game faceoff between the Golden Bears and the Cardinal was settled 24-23 in Cal's favor Nov. 19. That means the axe stays at Berkeley for another year, much to the joy of rally committee members above. At top, freshman tight end Tony Gonzalez blocks Stanford's Jason White, a junior linebacker.
