Padilla Becomes Acting Vice Chancellor on Jan. 1

Vice Chancellor Russ Ellis, who has continued to serve as vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs since his retirement last June, will step down from his position effective Dec. 31.

Professor Genaro Padilla, currently the faculty assistant in Undergraduate Affairs, has agreed to accept the role of acting vice chancellor beginning Jan. 1.

He will hold the post until a search can be conducted during the spring semester.

Ellis, who had asked to step down from his role as vice chancellor, will continue his work with the East Bay Partnership for Service, part of President Clinton's National Service Program.

He will also continue his efforts with the East Bay Corridor Project, a multi-jurisdictional partnership for addressing community problems.

In addition, Ellis will assist with the transition to a new vice chancellor.

Professor Padilla holds a faculty position in the English Department and has long had a strong interest in student issues.

He was the faculty assistant for affirmative action and in August became the faculty assistant to the vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs.
