'Chunnel' Chief's Industrial Liaison Conference Talk

Not too long ago, all one needed to cross the English Channel was a pair of goggles and an iron will. These days, passengers can hop a train from England to France through the Channel Tunnel, the largest private construction project on record.

John Neerhout, a 1953 mechanical engineering alumnus of Berkeley, will discuss his role as the project chief executive for Eurotunnel--the owner of the Channel Tunnel--during the keynote speech of this year's Industrial Liaison Program conference.

The talk is scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, at 8:30 a.m. in the Pauley Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. Students and faculty are invited to attend the talk, but must make advanced reservations by March 6 by sending email to ilpinfo@coe or calling 642-6611. Faculty members are also encouraged to make reservations to have their classes attend the event.

Neerhout, an executive vice president of the Bechtel Group, Inc., oversaw the Eurotunnel project from 1990-93. He is a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and currently serves as a director of the Homestake Mining Co. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1992.
