Merce Cunningham's 'Ocean' April 19, 20

Choreographer Merce Cunningham, a leader and innovator in the world of dance, brought his company to campus for a week-long residency before Cal Performance's United States premiere presentation of "Ocean," his final collaboration with the late composer John Cage, on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, at 8 p.m. in Harmon Arena.

Performed with a 112-piece orchestra, "Ocean" is set to a score with additional electronic music and marine sounds. The work is staged with audience surrounding the circular performance space.

Serving as choreographer-in-the-round opened up a number of possibilities, particularly in terms of directions and facings, said Cunningham at a luncheon in his honor at Alumni House. "When I was putting it together, I had a multi-second thought of what Einstein meant about curvature of space."

Community Service Award Ceremony

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on National and Community Service will host the Human Corps recognition ceremony, "It Starts With the Heart" Thursday, April 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the education center of the Tang Center.

The ceremony will honor this year's outstanding community service award recipients, who have been chosen from an impressive pool of faculty, staff and student nominees. Assemblyman John Vasconcellos, author of the legislation that created the Human Corps, will present the awards.

The campus community is invited to attend the ceremony and reception immediately following.
