Vote in June for Retirement Board

Editor:

During the month of June, most non-faculty career employees Universitywide will again have the opportunity to elect a new member to the UC Retirement Plan (UCRS) advisory Board.

UCRS Board members are your fellow employees who serve four-year terms without compensation, meeting quarterly in Oakland to advise plan administrators on matters of policy, benefits and procedures.

Recent board agendas have included discussion of formulas for retirees' annual COLAs; constitution of the board itself; workings of the 403(b) plan; comparison with pension plans at other universities; consideration of UCRP finances and costs-to-date of recent benefit enhancements such as the lump-sum cashout.

In the 1995 election fewer than 8 percent of eligible university employees voted. While campus-by-campus representation is not presumed by board regulations, the laboratories have to date been far more effective in marshaling support for their own candidates than have any of the campuses: Berkeley in fact has never elected a non-Academic Senate representative.

The future of our retirement benefits is too important to ignore. Please urge your staff and colleagues to join you in taking greater interest--and voice--in your growing stake in UCRP.

Read candidacy statements on UC Benefits World Wide Web home page: http://www.ucop.edu/bencom/boardpress.

Watch for the home election mailing to be sent to all eligible UCRS voters. If you don't receive it by June 10, call UC Benefits Customer Service at 1-800-888-8267, ext. 70651.

Be sure to vote by phone, anytime during the month of June.
