Children's Summer

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care has collected the following information on children's programs that will be offered on campus this summer.

UC Berkeley Academic Talent Development Program

Intellectually challenging summer classes for motivated students in grades K-11.

Elementary Division: For three weeks in July, students in grades K-6 attend classes at a school near Berkeley campus to explore academic areas not offered at their regular schools.

Secondary Division: 7th to 11th graders come to campus for a six-week summer session for academic acceleration and enrichment.

Dates/Times:
Elementary Division, July 7-25.
Secondary Division, June 17-July 26.

Ages: Elementary, K-6; Secondary,7-12.

Price/Financial Assistance:
Elementary, $330.
Secondary, $330/5-units, $490/10-units.
Excludes application and materials fees. Some financial aid available.

Young Entrepreneurs
At Berkeley

This program of the East Bay Outreach Project at the Haas School of Business is a free, year-long, entrepreneurial training and mentoring program for high schoolers, teaching the basics of starting and running a business.

Dates/Times: Phase I: Two-week summer session in July, including classroom instruction, guest speakers and field trips.

Phase II: September-May during the school year, participants are paired with MBA graduate student mentors who work with them to complete business plans. After attending additional workshops, participants can present their business plans to EBOP Venture Capital Board. Successful plans receive startup funding.

Ages: 9th-12th graders from Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville and Richmond are eligible.

Price/Financial Assistance:No cost. Curriculum, materials, transportation to and from trips and some meals during Phase I provided. YEB is especially looking for economically disadvantaged and minority youth with good ideas for potential businesses.

Intercollegiate Athletics And Recreational Sports
Arts and crafts, basketball, drama, soccer fencing, hockey, lacrosse, nature studies, softball, swimming, tae kwon do, tennis.

Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area

Dates/Times: Spring Break and Summer Youth Programs. Full-day (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) or half-day sessions and extended care are available.

Ages 4-14 years. Price/Financial Assistance: Fees vary for SCRA programs.

o Blue Camp
Dates/Times: Two four-week sessions, June 16-July 11; July 21-Aug. 15.

CAL Adventures
The Youth Outdoor Program offers courses ranging from sea kayaking, sailing and white water rafting to backpacking, rock climbing and first aid.

Dates/Times: Year-round weekdays and weekends, half-day and full-day.

Ages: 8-17, depending on activity.

Price/Financial Assistance:

Varies depending on activity. Financial assistance is plentiful.

Botanical Garden
Summer Day Camp

A summer day camp of six weekly sessions in June and July to study nature.

University Village Recreation Program
Sports and focus summer camps.
Sports camps: Double Diamond Baseball, Village Basketball Camp, On-the-Ball Soccer Camp serving children 7-15 years old. Extended care available for all sports camps from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Albany Kids Corner Summer Camps: Full day programs for children 7-12. Thematic learning and play experience in art and drama, science, sports, Spanish and sports adventures.

Dates/Times: Two-week camps run consecutively June 16 through Aug. 22.

Ages: 7-15 years.

Price/Financial Assistance: Scholarships are available.

LHS Science Day Camps
Half-day morning and afternoon science day camps to explore everything from computers to chemistry to crime solving. Lunch time and late afternoon programs July 28-Aug. 8 for children in both morning and afternoon camps.

Summer Fun at LHS
The Universitys hands-on science center is open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with interactive exhibits, daily planetarium shows, live animals to touch and observe in the biology lab, a free computer lab and special family events each week.

Dates/Times:Summer schedule of daily programs, discovery lab, computer lab. planetarium shows; June 16-Aug. 31.

Ages: All ages.

Price/Financial Assistance: Admission $2-6; children under 3 free.

UC Berkeley Summer Enrichment Program for Girls
Offered through the Department of Psychology and the Institute of Human Development, the focus during the five-week program is on enrichment through group projects in classroom settings, structured and free play outdoor activities, creative arts, drama classes and small group discussions.

Dates/Times: July 7- Aug. 8. M-F, 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Ages: 6-12 years (must have completed 1st grade by end of spring).

Price: Offered free to eligible families. However, because we are a research-based program, participating families must meet screening/application criteria.

Special Requirements: For girls ages 6-12. About half the participants will have specific attentional difficulties (ADHD); the other half will have no history of difficulties in this area.

MESA Summer Academy
Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement is an academic enrichment program that focuses on math, science.

Dates/Times: June 16-July 25, 9 am-5 p.m., M-F.

Ages: Entering 7th grade-12th grade in fall 1997 (ages 12-17).

Price/Financial Assistance: $600 for summer program. Financial aid is available.

Registration: Application packets available mid-February.

Phone: 642-2041. Special Requirements: Applicants must be on track in math, receiving a grade "C" or better.

English Language Program of UCB Extension Youth
English Adventure program offers international youth an opportunity to improve English skills and enhance cross cultural awareness.

Dates/Times: July 7-25. English classes mornings; cultural, recreational and water sports afternoons.

Ages: 14-16 years.

Price/Financial Assistance: $1,985 includes tuition, housing accommodations with three meals/day, activities, water sports instruction and a three-day camping trip to Yosemite.

Special Requirements: Beginning to intermediate proficiency in English. Participants should like sports, outdoor activities and meeting students from other cultures.
