The University of Uppsala, Sweden has chosen Harry N. Scheiber, the Riesenfeld Professor of Law and History at Boalt Hall, to receive an honorary doctorate of laws degree during the university’s May commencement ceremonies.

Scheiber, associate dean of the School of Law and chair of the Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program, will deliver an address on “Popular Democracy, the Plebiscite and American Constitutionalism” during the Uppsala commencement ceremony. Scheiber has written extensively on American legal history as well as on constitutional issues.

He also directs a research program in ocean law and policy based in the Center for the Study of Law and Society and teaches in Boalt’s renowned environmental studies curriculum. In 1994-5, he was chair of the Academic Senate, Berkeley division.

Earlier this academic year, Scheiber was a keynote speaker, along with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, at a Stockholm conference on European and U.S. federalism sponsored by the Swedish Research Council.
