UC Extension Gives Discount to Staff

by Kathleen Phillips Satz, Human Resources
posted July 15, 1998

Now you can take that UC Berkeley Extension class you've been thinking about. Beginning this fall, academic and staff employees will be eligible for a 25 percent discount on registration fees for many Extension courses.

Career staff and academic employees who have at least 12 months of service and who are in appointments working more than 50 percent time are eligible for the discount. (The program is not available to students or those in visiting titles.)

"Human Resources, the Academic Personnel Office, and UC Berkeley Extension are committed to offering programs that support staff members' efforts to take responsibility for their own career development," said Alice Gregory, Human Resources director.

She and Extension Dean Mary Metz designed a program that allows both the employee and the university to benefit through "continuous learning."

Gregory believes that the discount program will benefit both Berkeley and its employees by realizing one of the primary goals of the administrative vision, principles and values: to invest in human resources by promoting the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

To minimize the administrative process, registration will probably involve a signature by the employee verifying that he or she meets Extension's eligibility requirements. If courses conflict with normal work hours, the employee is responsible for obtaining appropriate supervisory approvals.

More information about the discount program is expected by late July. For information about other educational opportunities, see the Human Resources website at http://www.hrweb.berkeley.edu and the UC Berkeley Extension website at http://www.unex.berkeley.edu:4243/.
