			Prime Minister of Cape Verde Visits Berkeley The first democratically elected prime minister of the Republic of Cape Verde, Carlos Alberto Wahnon de Carvalho Veiga, visited campus July 30 as part of a nationwide celebration of the 23rd anniversary of Cape Verde's independence from Portugal. Richard Herr, chair of the Portuguese Studies Program, and Martha Saavedra, vice chair of the Joint Stanford-Berkeley Center for African Studies, hosted the Prime Minister and his delegation. Cape Verde, about 350 miles off the coast of West Africa, has some 400,000 citizens living on 10 islands. Veiga, a lawyer and reformer who pushed for democracy, has been prime minister since 1991. His visit included tours of the Haas School of Business, Boalt Hall and Bancroft and Doe Libraries. Without a university system of its own, Cape Verde students must go abroad to study. Veiga hopes that the U.S. Cape Verdean community -- which numbers 400,000, concentrated mainly in California and New England -- will lend financial support to those Cape Verdean students who want to attend universities like Berkeley.
