Staff Bear Facts Improves Access to Student Information

By D. Lyn Hunter, Public Affairs
posted September 9, 1998

Staff Bear Facts, a new service that allows academic department staff access to student information such as grades, class lists, financial aid information and addresses, is now available online.

Because this is a web-based system, Staff Bear Facts is platform-independent and can be accessed by any computer with a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

In the past, staff used a cumbersome and time-consuming mainframe reporting system. Most departments did without reports because they weren't available on a timely basis.

"The major advantage of Staff Bear Facts lies in its powerful and easy reporting capability. Staff will now be able to generate and print various types of reports concerning students in their departments," said Susie Castillo-Robson, registrar.

Because of the private nature of this information, department supervisors received training on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act this past spring and summer. Additional training on how to use the system was also provided. More training sessions will be scheduled as demand arises, said Robson.

Staff Bear Facts was developed by Student Information Systems and the Registrars Office under the auspices of the Bear Facts policy committee.

The web address for Staff Bear Facts is http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu/.

For more information on obtaining access to Staff Bear Facts, contact Dorothy Jones at 643-5242 or dorothyj@uclink4.berkeley.edu.

Staff can apply for access using an electronic application, available at http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu:4000/.

Questions on the content and capabilities of Staff Bear Facts should be directed to Russell Low at 642-7009 or rsl@uclink.berkeley.edu.
