East Bay Community Law Center Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

posted September 9, 1998

The East Bay Community Law Center (formerly the Berkeley Community Law Center) will celebrate its 10th anniversary Sept. 26. The center, which was founded by Boalt Hall students in 1988, has addressed more than 12,000 legal matters for low-income citizens during the past 10 years.

Currently, 15 to 20 Boalt students do their clinical internship (working with local people on real legal cases) at the center each semester. The students aid local citizens in such areas as housing, HIV/AIDS, income support and community economic development.

"Boalt Hall has had a variety of clinical programs but the East Bay Community Law Center has been our longest running and most significant clinical program," said Charles Weisselberg, Boalt Hall professor of law and director of the Center for Clinical Education.

"It's been an extremely important part of Boalt Hall students' education for the past 10 years. It has provided an important service for members of the community and for the students," Weisselberg said.

The Saturday anniversary celebration will include two morning panel discussions at Oakland Children's Hospital. The first, starting at 9 am, will be about community development. The second, starting at 10:30 am, is titled Multi-Disciplinary Models For Addressing Poverty. These discussions are free and open to the public.

A reunion reception for former interns (mostly Boalt alumni), founders and benefactors will be held from 1 to 3 pm at La Pena. In the evening there will be a Party at Mr. E's Jazz Club in downtown Berkeley for all the members of the center's community.

For more information about the center and its anniversary celebration call 548-4040 ext. 308 or e-mail the center at bclclog1@socrates.berkeley.edu.
