Flu Shot Clinics Open Oct. 14

posted September 30, 1998

It's that time of year again, when new strains of influenza viruses attack respiratory tracts, sending us to bed with fever, muscle aches, general weakness and extreme fatigue.

You can escape the scourge with a yearly flu shot. University Health Services has scheduled 1998 flu shot clinics from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14; Thursday, Oct. 29; Thursday, Nov. 5; Monday, Nov. 16; and Wednesday, Dec. 2.

All clinics will be held in the Class of '42 Room on the first floor of Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. No appointment is necessary.

The cost for a shot is $10.

Each year, the composition of the vaccine is based on influenza viruses recently isolated around the world by the World Health Organization, said Cameron.

Among the strains in this year's formula is the Sydney strain, which last year caused many hospitalizations.

Flu symptoms typically include a 102-103-degree fever, muscle aches, weakness and fatigue. It is spread through the air, and by contaminated hands and inanimate objects.

It can also be spread by people who have not yet developed symptoms.

The vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of becoming infected, if it is received annually.

For information, call University Health Services, 642-2000.
