Seeking a Director for Berkeley's New Center for the Arts

posted October 28, 1998

The Center for the Arts, created to develop and foster new forms of creative expression and enhance creative thinking, will provide a structure within which Berkeley's academic departments, arts presenting organizations and the community can come together to create new knowledge in the arts and disseminate the results of their endeavors.

The new position of Director of the Center for the Arts requires intellectual vision, personal energy and administrative skills. The director will serve for a three-year, renewable term at 50 percent time.

The director, with the assistance of an advisory committee, will be responsible for overseeing and guiding center programs and supervising the work of a professional staff.

The director should possess demonstrated administrative skills, the ability to shape and foster diverse and productive programs in the arts, and the willingness to lead the center's efforts to establish a sound fiscal base for its continued operations.

Candidates must be ladder-rank members of the Berkeley faculty, preferably at the rank of professor.

The position calls for an individual of eminence, committed to the highest standards of creation, performance and scholarship in the arts, and to the encouragement of cooperative work that spans disciplinary boundaries in pursuit of those standards.

Application deadline is Nov. 18, 1998.

Send applications and nominations to Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost; Re: Director, Center for the Arts; 200 California Hall (MC 1500).

For information, call 642-1961.
