Environmental Authority to Give Hitchcock Lectures

World-renowned environmental scientist and Oxford University Fellow Norman Myers will deliver the 1998 Charles M. and Martha Hitchcock Lectures, Tuesday, Nov. 10 and Thursday, Nov. 12.

Myers will discuss "Environment, Population, Consumption and Sustainable Development: The Great Challenges of Our Time," Nov. 10 at 4:10 p.m. in International House Auditorium. His Nov. 12 lecture, at the same time and place, is on "Tropical Forests: Their Future and Our Future."

A central figure in alerting the world to the loss of biodiversity, Myers originated the biodiversity "hotspots" strategy and has generated over $300 million for conservation activities. He is a senior fellow at the World Wildlife Fund and an adviser at the World Bank's Global Environment Facility.

Electronic Resources Classes Start Nov. 9

The Library, with assistance from the Instructional Technology Program, is offering a series of seminars on using and creating electronic information resources Nov. 9 to Dec. 8, for faculty, graduate students and other campus research staff.

Topics include Pathfinder for scholars, using MELVYL medical database, finding and using full-text electronic resources, web-searching techniques, EndNote 3 bibliography software and beginning and intermediate web design.

New Music by Campus Grad Student Composers

New works by campus graduate student composers will be featured Friday, Nov. 6 in the first concert of the 1998-99 season presented by the Berkeley New Music Project. The concert is at 8 p.m. in Hertz Hall. Admission is free.

The program includes a work by Keeril Makin for string quartet, by Bruce Christian Bennet for woodwind quintet, and by Tom Swafford for violin and tape, as well as vocal works by Fernando Benadon and Lea Heinemann.

Online Oral History

"Oral Histories Online at the Bancroft Library" will be the topic of a discussion and demonstration Friday, Nov. 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the SIMS FlexLab, 202 South Hall.

Ann Lage, principal editor at the Regional Oral History Office, and Merrilee Proffitt, digital library development specialist at the Bancroft , will demonstrate oral histories on the Internet and address the potential impact of electronic publication on oral history.

Lage and Proffitt have been involved with converting the Regional Oral History Office's oral history series "The Suffragists" from a paper-based to an online resource.
