A Clean Fuel First

A campus bus recently became the world's first to run on a new technology that offers the power of a diesel engine without the environmental or health hazards of diesel emissions.

Campus officials, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Westport Innovations, Inc., of British Columbia convened on campus Nov. 17 to announce the conversion of three campuses buses to compressed natural gas fuel, using the Canadian company's high-pressure direct injection system. The first bus using the new technology began running Nov. 17; the two others will begin their campus routes on natural gas fuel early next year.

"What we're trying to do is decrease pollutants and burn cleaner fuel," said Kevin Mathy, manager of the campus's transit operations. "We're helping to develop a new technology and trying to clean up the environment."

"The participants represent a range of political affiliations and policy perspectives, but they are all open to exploring alternatives for the future," said Harley Shaiken, director of the Center for Latin American Studies and organizer of the conference.

Participants from the U.S. include David E. Bonior (D-Mich.), Democratic Whip and second ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives; Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-Cal.), chair of the Hispanic Caucus; Congressman Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio); and Congressman William D. Delahunt (D-Mass.).

Campus Power Test Dec. 20

The campus power load will be transferred to the cogeneration plant Sunday, Dec. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon, to test the plant's ability to hold the power in the event of a failure at PG&E, the campus's primary power source.

Officials of Campus Facilities Services do not expect the test to disrupt electrical service. If the power were to go out, they say, it would be restored within 15 to 20 minutes.

"We do not expect any problems," said Rick Karvosky, associate director of Campus Facilities Services. "We are just taking precautions and feel it prudent for others to do the same. We are asking anyone who has sensitive research, experiments or equipment to consider turning them off during the test period."
