Violetta Anna Lane

Violetta Anna Lane, a Berkeley staff member for 40 years and recipient of the campus's highest honor, the Berkeley Citation, died Jan. 10 in Concord. She was 84.

A management services officer in the College of Engineering, Lane was awarded the Berkeley Citation in 1976, making her the first non-academic staff member at the college to receive the citation. She attended Berkeley as an undergraduate and took her first campus job in 1936.

Lane is survived by nieces Anita Marie Weiss, of Walnut Creek, and Jeane Hevener, of Benicia; nephews Gregory Lane, of Newport Beach, and Paul Lane Cooper and Richard Joseph Cooper, both of Pleasant Hill; and 18 grandnieces and nephews.
