UC BERKELEY SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR GIRLS

An annual program offered through the Psychology Department and the Institute of Human Development with a focus on enrichment through group projects, structured and free-play outdoor activities, creative arts, drama, dance/movement classes and small group discussions.

Dates/Times: July 5-Aug. 6, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. ; Ages: 6-12 years (must have completed first grade by end of spring); Price: No charge to eligible families. Because this is a research-based program, all participating families must meet screening/application criteria.
Special Requirements: About half the participants will have specific attentional difficulties (ADHD); the other half will have no history of difficulties in this area.

UNIVERSITY EXTENSION ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM

Offering international youth an opportunity to improve English skills and enhance cross-cultural awareness.

Dates/Times: July 6-23; English classes mornings; cultural, recreational and water sports afternoons. Ages: 14-16 years; Price: $2,050. Includes tuition, housing with three meals/day, activities, water sports instruction and a camping trip to Yosemite.

UC BERKELEY ACADEMIC TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Intellectually challenging summer classes for motivated students in grades K-11.

Elementary Division: For three weeks in July, students in grades K-6 attend classes at a school near Berkeley campus to explore academic subjects not offered at their regular schools. Secondary Division: 7th to 11th graders come to campus for a six-week summer session for academic acceleration and enrichment.
Dates/Times: Elementary (K-6): July 12-30; Secondary (grades 7-11): June 21-July 30; Price/Financial Assistance: Elementary, $340; Secondary, $340/5 units, $500/10 units. Excludes application and materials fees. Some financial aid available.
Registration: Applications must be submitted by: Elementary, Friday, March 29; Secondary, Friday, March 2 (late applications accepted as space permits). Earlier application is advised.

MESA SUMMER ACADEMY

Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement is an academic enrichment program focusing on math and science. Call 642-2041 for Summer 1999 dates and updated information and eligibility requirements.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS AT BERKELEY (YEB)

A program of the East Bay Outreach Project (EBOP) at the Haas School of Business offering free, year-long entrepreneurial training and mentoring program for high schoolers, teaching the basics of starting and running a business.

YEB is especially looking for economically disadvantaged and minority youth with good ideas for potential businesses.

Dates/Times: Phase I, July 24-Aug. 6, two-week summer session, including classroom instruction, guest speakers and field trips. Phase II, Sept.-May. During the school year participants are paired with MBA graduate student mentors who work with them to complete business plans. After additional workshops, participants can present their plans to the EBOP Venture Capital Board. Successful plans receive startup funding.
Ages: 9th-12th graders from Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, and Richmond are eligible. Price: No cost. Lunches, curriculum, bus passes as needed; field trips and guest speakers are provided during Phase I.

UC BOTANICAL GARDEN

Botanical Garden Summer Day Camp


A summer day camp of weekly sessions to study nature.

Dates/Times: For children ages 5-7, June 28-July 2, July 12-16, and July 19-23. For those ages 8-11, July 26-30 and Aug. 2-6.
Price: $135/week. 10 percent discount for two or more children from the same family during the summer.

LAWRENCE HALL OF SCIENCE

LHS Science, Math and Technology Day Camps


Half-day morning and afternoon day camps to explore everything from computers to chemistry to crime solving. Lunch-time and late-afternoon programs available for 3-6 graders enrolled in both morning and afternoon camps.

LHS Residential Summer Science Camps and High School Research Camps


Four week-long residential camps offer coastline ecology explorations in the Santa Cruz Mountains (ages 8-10), backpacking in Tahoe National Forest (ages 11-15), wildlife biology research in the Sierras (grades 9-12), and marine biology research at the UC Bodega Marine Lab (grades 9-12). All programs combine outdoor science with recreational activities.

Dates/Times: June 14-Aug. 14. Ages: 8-15.

Summer Fun at LHS


A hands-on science center with interactive exhibits open daily, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily planetarium shows, live animals to touch and observe in the biology lab, a free computer lab, and special family events each week.

Beastly Botanical Safari Camp


LHS and the Botanical Garden have created two one-week sessions for grades 3-4. Campers explore plants and animals from all over the world and across time.
