Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker

Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker performs Saturday, May 2, at 3 and 8 p.m.

More than 50 jazz groups from colleges and universities throughout the western United States converge on campus for a weekend of funk, big band, combo and vocal ensemble performances Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1.

Now in its 25th year, the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival is the largest student-operated college jazz festival in the nation. Performances and competitions will be held in Zellerbach Hall, Wheeler Auditorium and the UC Choral Rehearsal Hall, located in the César Chavez Student Center.

Admission to the festival is $7 per day or $10 for a two-day pass. Tickets can be purchased at the Zellerbach Playhouse lobby April 30 and Zellerbach Hall on May 1. A clinic featuring jazz-funk saxophonist Michael Brecker, winner of seven Grammy Awards and co-founder of the influential jazz group the Brecker Brothers, takes place at 3 p.m. in the Choral Rehearsal Hall. Brecker has performed with some of the biggest names in music, including Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen. For jazz festival information, call 642-5062.

Brecker will also perform an evening concert Saturday, May 1 at 8 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall, sponsored by Cal Performances. The UC Jazz Ensemble will open the show at 7 p.m. Tickets are available through the Zellerbach ticket office at 642-9988.
