Commencements Are Coming

Posted May 5, 1999

More than 9,000 students will receive undergraduate and graduate degrees from Berkeley this month in 53 ceremonies representing 78 departments, schools and colleges. Most take place the weekends of May 15 to 16 and May 21 to 24.

Speakers at this year's commencements include Miguel Angel Rodriguez, PhD '66, president of Costa Rica (economics); Armistead Maupin, author and columnist (English); Steven Chu, 1997 Nobel laureate in physics (astronomy/physics/physical sciences); J. Michael Bishop, UCSF Chancellor (molecular and cell biology); and Jacquelynn Baas, retiring Berkeley Art Museum director (art practice).

Commencement Convocation -- an event for seniors co-sponsored by Chancellor and Mrs. Robert Berdahl, the California Alumni Association and the Senior Class Council -- will take place May 11 at 4 p.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium. Author Terry McMillan, '77, will be the featured speaker.

Commencement Convocation honors the University Medalist Vikram Rao and other outstanding seniors. General admission tickets will be available at Cal Performances box office May 6.
