Graduate Teaching Assistants Vote for AGSE Representation Posted June 9, 1999 Berkeley graduate teaching assistants voted in favor of representation by the United Auto Workers on Thursday, May 13. About 71 percent of the 1,590 eligible graduate student employees participated in the election. The California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) announced that 833 graduate-student employees (74 percent) had voted in favor of a union, with 293 voting against. Chancellor Berdahl said he was pleased with the high voter turnout. "Our main objective was to encourage all graduate student instructors to vote in this important election, and I'm very pleased with the turnout," he said. "They have spoken strongly and in impressive numbers. As I have said from the start, this campus is committed to respecting the final election outcome. We look forward to a productive relationship with the union," said Berdahl. The Association of Graduate Student Employees (AGSE) at Berkeley, which is affiliated with the UAW, said negotiations over wages, benefits and salaries are expected soon. UCLA graduate student instructors, readers and tutors opted to unionize in March. Their counterparts at UC Santa Cruz, San Diego, Davis, Irvine and Riverside held their elections during the past month and are voting this week at UC Santa Barbara.
