Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Carol Christ has announced plans to resign her administrative position effective June 2000, and return to teaching full time.

"I feel fortunate to have had the privilege of serving as the campus's chief academic officer for the past five years," said Christ, "and I look forward to the work ahead in the coming year."

Christ has served in her position since 1994. An English professor who specializes in Victorian literature, she previously served four years as provost of the College of Letters and Science, the largest college on campus.

"Carol Christ has served in the campus administration with great distinction for nearly a decade and has contributed enormously to the strength and quality of Berkeley," said Chancellor Berdahl. "We will miss her leadership, but our students will continue to benefit from her teaching and scholarship."

Christ joined the Berkeley faculty in 1970 after receiving her PhD in English from Yale University. Throughout her administrative career, she continued to teach each semester.
