Photo: She Plied the Seas
Posted September 22, 1999
This figure of the Greek goddess Persephone presides over the main reading room of the Water Resources Center Archives in O'Brien Hall. Carved from a single tree in the mid 1800s, she served as the figurehead of the ship "Zodiac," which traded on the Baltic. After languishing in a sea captain's garden for a number of decades, she was discovered and restored by an antique dealer. Two hundred and twenty pounds, and 5'2" in height, she was donated to the archives a decade ago by Mrs. Jerry Chambers. Peg Skorpinski photo.
