Peter Jennings Comes to Campus Posted September 29, 1999 ABC "World News Tonight" Anchor Peter Jennings will join Journalism School Dean Orville Schell in a conversation on the media at 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4, in Zellerbach Hall. The event is part of the ongoing Herb Caen/San Francisco Chronicle Lectures. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Jennings has worked in broadcast media most of his life, starting at age nine as host of a children's radio show on the CBC called "Peter's People." After dropping out of high school, Jennings spent a brief time hosting Canada's version of American Bandstand before moving on to local radio shows, then co-anchor of Canada's top news program. Jennings made the move to America in 1964 and became the youngest national network anchor at age 26, working for ABC's "World News Tonight." He was replaced by Frank Reynolds after three years of poor ratings and was made a correspondent. After Reynolds' death in 1983, Jennings was moved back to the anchor desk, using his experience in the field to boost the show's ratings. The Herb Caen/San Francisco Chronicle lecture is an annual event that features prominent members of the media in a talk moderated by Schell. Caen was a longtime, well-read Chronicle columnist.
