Campus police review board public hearing is May 9

The Berkeley Campus Police Review Board will hold a public hearing from 7 to 9 p.m, Tuesday, May 9, in the Tilden Room, 5th Floor, Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union.

The board will report to concerned members of the campus community on reforms to board procedures recently approved by the campus, new rules implementing those reforms, and ongoing monitoring of the UC Police Department's civilian complaint process. Individuals and organizations will have an opportunity to present their views on any aspect of the review board's work.

Copies of the board's annual report are available from Lillian Brock (Chancellor's Office, 200 California Hall; 643-0680;

llbrock@uclink4.berkeley.edu) and will also be available at the hearing. Those wishing to reserve time for a formal presentation at the meeting should contact Brock no later than Friday, May 5.

Proposals on minimizing hazardous waste due May 31

Environment, Health & Safety is currently accepting proposals related to minimizing the campus's production of hazardous waste.

Faculty, faculty-sponsored students and administrators are eligible to propose projects involving research, development or action plans on reducing chemical, medical or radioactive waste.

Last year, EH&S awarded a total of $74,000 in Hazardous Waste Minimization Grants to four departments. Recipients included the College of Chemistry, granted $18,000 to produce videos on "the art of waste minimization in the undergraduate laboratory," and the Cancer Research Laboratory, which received $30,000 for equipment to help reduce liquid hazardous waste.

Applications for the 2000-01 program will be accepted through May 31. For information, call 642-3073 or see (www.ehs.berkeley.edu).

Films Air Contemporary Indigenous Struggles in Canada and Mexico

Two films on contemporary indigenous struggles in the Americas will screen from noon to 3 p.m., Thursday, May 4, in the ethnic studies conference room, on the fifth floor of Barrows Hall.

The Canadian documentary "Power of the North" depicts the struggle of the Cree people in Northern Quebec to stop a hydro-electricity project that threatens their traditional lands. "El Jardin del Eden" ("The Garden of Eden"), from Mexico, examines the northern migration of Mexico's indigenous people.

The film symposium is presented by the Townsend Center's on indigenous peoples of the Americas working group.
