Search begins for new librarian

Professor Thomas Leonard, associate dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, has been appointed interim university librarian, effective September 1. Leonard replaces Gerald Lowell, who retired from the university. Leonard was chosen based on his service on the Academic Senate Library Committee, most recently as chairman. Professor Anthony Newcomb will head the search committee for a new University Librarian.

In addition to Newcomb and Leonard, the search committee for the new librarian is made up of: George Breslauer, Beth Burnside, Erich Gruen, Phoebe Janes, Norma Kobzina, Marian Koshland, Richard Lucier, Christina Maslach, Robert Wilensky, Sheryl Wong, Jo D.Wright and Kerry McDermott.

Details about the search committee and the position are available at the following Web site: www.chance.berkeley.edu/evcp/ULSearch.html.

New Quest work order system is online

Computer Network Services recently rolled out an online work order request system, Quest, to improve service to the campus.

The Quest system, part of campus-wide accounting system changes, allows departmental administrators to enter CNS voice or data work order requests through the Internet and to track their progress online.

Quest is available online at telecom.berkeley.edu/ccu/quest.html. For access information, see your departmental CNS contact or send a request to cnsbill@socrates. berkeley.edu.

The service will soon be available, as well, through CalNet. For information on CalNet, send e-mail to 5reg@berkeley.edu.

For information on upcoming Quests orientations, send e-mail to ccu@socrates.berkeley.edu.

Spare rooms needed to house students

Due to the lack of affordable housing in the Bay Area, some students will need short-term housing accommodations while seeking permanent arrangements.

Those at Housing and Dining Services are hoping the campus community can help by providing temporary housing in their homes this fall.

Offering a spare room for even a few days or weeks is helpful, said Sondra Jensen, director of housing and dining administrative services. Renting a room for a semester or two also iss encouraged. Rooms in the area are now renting for $400 to $600 per month.

Those interested can contact Jensen at sjensen@uclink4.berkeley.edu or 642-5802.

Science museum seeks volunteers

Those interested in helping families enjoy science can donate their time as a docent at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

Volunteers may choose from a variety of assignments, including special events, tours of exhibits, biology and computer labs, the library or the gift store.

To learn more, orientation sessions will be offered for weekday volunteers on Thursday, Sept. 28 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and for weekend volunteers on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon.

For information, call 643-5471.

Correction

In the August 16 edition of the Berkeleyan, an obituary for John Harsanyi incorrectly stated that the Department of Economics was part of the Haas School of Business. The Department of Economics is part of the College of Letters & Science.
