27 SEPTEMBER 00 | The renowned music director of the San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, will discuss his mentor and colleague, the late Aaron Copland, at 2 p.m. Monday, October 2 at Hertz Hall.

In his talk, "Aaron Copland: Portrait of a Radical Patriarch" Tilson Thomas will discuss the man and his music, and his own collaborations with this American musical icon. Professor Katherine Bergeron, of the College of Letters and Science's Department of Music, will moderate.

Tilson Thomas first played for Copland at the age of 19, playing the composer's "Piano Variations" -a performance that so impressed Copland that he immediately took the young musician under his wing. Tilson Thomas went on to premiere many of Copland's pieces, including the orchestral version of the "Emily Dickinson Songs."

One of the foremost authorities on and interpreters of Copland, Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of Aaron Copland's birth with the September release of "Aaron Copland-The Essence of America." Included in the three-CD boxed set is an interview with Tilson Thomas concerning Copland, who was born in 1900 and died in 1990.

Michael Tilson Thomas' appearance at Hertz Hall is presented by Cal Performances and the Department of Music. Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. For information call 642-4864.
