Walter Freeman

Neurobiology Professor Walter Freeman has been promoted to fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. A fellowship is the institute's highest grade of membership conferred on members who have significantly contributed to their technical field. Freeman was recognized for his development of biologically realistic neuroengineering models.

Gerald Feldman

Germany has honored History Professor Gerald Feldman with the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his achievements in promoting friendly relations between the United States and Germany.

Feldman has written extensively on the modern history of Germany and has advocated close cooperation between American and German scholars. He has contributed substantially to the historical annals, and as director of the Center for German and European Studies at Berkeley, he has done much to promote collaboration not just between the United States and Germany, but among other European nations as well.

Feldman was decorated with the honor at a reception in Dwinelle Hall on Nov. 30.

Sharon Marcus

The Modern Language Association has given honorable mention to English Professor Sharon Marcus, the runner-up for its Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies. The prize is awarded annually to an association member who has published a critical work surveying at least two literatures; Marcus's book "Apartment Stories: City and Home in Nineteenth-Century Paris and London" analyzes the portrayal of housing in French and English novels.

In addition to the book, Marcus has written essays on the issues of urban living spaces in nineteenth-century London and Paris. She has also helped organize an international conference in Paris that dealt with the same issues.

Summer Sessions wins CASE award for radio ad

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education has given top honors to Berkeley Summer Sessions for a radio ad featuring the Berkeley Men's Octet making a jingle out of Summer Sessions' Web site address.

Aimed both at students and a general Bay Area audience, the advertisement aired on KZQZ 95.7 from March to April for a total of 280 spots.

The award was presented at a CASE conference last semester in San Diego.
