The football game in Memorial Stadium is a high point of Homecoming & Parents Weekend.

19 September 2001 | Nearly 4,000 alumni, parents, students and friends are expected to attend this year’s 5th annual Homecoming & Parents Weekend, Sept. 28-30. Many parents will be visiting their children for the first time since the school year began, and 10 classes will celebrate reunions.

Across the campus, schools and colleges, museums and libraries, and student and alumni organizations have planned special events to welcome Homecoming participants. More than 20 distinguished faculty will give lectures — a feature of the weekend that has traditionally been as popular as the football game and the big homecoming rally at Haas Pavilion.

At 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Chancellor Berdahl will give a “state-of-the campus” talk at the Bear Affair Brunch on the Campanile Esplanade. Other activities range from a Cal CubFest for young children attending the weekend to the season’s first University Symphony concert.

Classes holding reunions during the weekend are The War Classes (’45, ’46 War ’47, and ’47) and the classes of ’48,’49,’51,’56, ’61, ’66, ’71, ’76, ’81, ’86, ’91, and ’96.

Although faculty members planned their lectures some time ago, several of the seminars are pertinent to this month’s events:
• Orville Schell, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, will discuss “The State of the American Media,” from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, in 370 Dwinelle.
• Political science professor Kiren Aziz Chaudry will talk about “The Gulf War and the Realignment of the Arab Middle East,” from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Friday, in 370 Dwinelle.
• “The Bush Administration’s Foreign Policy: Strategy and Politics” will be the subject of a lecture by Michael Nacht, dean and professor of the Goldman School of Public Policy, at 9 a.m., Saturday, in 370 Dwinelle.
• From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Chancellor Berdahl will moderate a panel discussion on “Multiculturalism at Cal” that will include a discussion of the campus’s efforts to ensure diversity; campus life for students and faculty of color today; and what alums, parents and students can do to make a difference. This event will be held in the Maufe Fife Room, 315 Wheeler.

The campus community is welcome to attend Homecoming & Parents Weekend events. A weekend pass, good for admission to all faculty seminars, open houses and tours, is available for $10.
