Sylvia Snow organized English as a Second Language classes for her staff of 300 custodians, a group in which 11 different languages are spoken. Judy Seibert worked evenings to help about 650 U.C. Extension students find housing this fall, in addition to the thousands of Berkeley students she normally assists. Because his manager had several hand surgeries, Durwin Wong volunteered to type up the performance evaluations for his entire department. It is contributions like these that earned Snow, Seibert, Wong and 47 other staff members Chancellor Outstanding Staff Awards this year. Winners were honored by Chancellor Berdahl; Paul Gray, executive vice chancellor and provost; and Horace Mitchell, vice chancellor for business and administrative services, at a ceremony Tuesday in Alumni House. “Your outstanding work makes such a difference,” the chancellor said to the honorees. “You are an inspiration to others, not just in your department, but to the whole campus.” After excerpts of their nomination letters were read, each awardee received a wooden bear sculpture and a framed certificate, and had their photo taken with the chancellor. This year’s 50 winners were culled from 60 individual and 20 team nominations, submitted by supervisors, co-workers, students or clients. The award — one of the campus’s highest honors for staff — was created to recognize employees who make exceptional contributions to the campus, particularly in the areas of customer relations, operational effectiveness, mentoring, collaboration or community service. Awards are presented to both individual staff and teams of staff. Following are this year’s award winners.
