Calling all green thumbs

17 April 2002 | Spring has sprung and nature’s vivid colors are abloom in the UC Botanical Garden.

To showcase its botanical splendors and its research efforts, the garden will hold a free Spring Garden Event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27. In light of concern over the spread of Sudden Oak Death, the event this year replaces the garden’s annual Spring Plant Sale, to focus instead on informative talks by researchers and horticulturists.

Featured experts include Dave Rizzo of UC Davis, and Berkeley Assistant Professor Matteo Garbelotto, who will review the latest research on Sudden Oak Death and share tips on how
to protect gardens and limit the spread of the disease.

Also making an appearance is horticultural insider
Jeff Rosendale, of Rosendale Wholesale Nursery and the affiliated Sierra Azul Nursery in Watsonville, who will show guests how to create a Mediterranean garden
California-style.

Participants can get garden advice, enter a raffle or stroll the Botanical Garden with a horticulture expert.

A members-only show, to be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday evening, kicks off the event.

For information, call 643-2755.
