24 October 2002 | A festive luncheon last week honored Service Award recipients, starting with staff who marked ten-year anniversaries on campus this year and celebrating each five-year increment beyond that. At the far end of the spectrum was Marcelle Baxter, center, of Procurement and Business Contracts, who at 45 years was the longest-serving staff member honored.

In all, 515 honorees, representing 9,300 years of service, were invited to the luncheon. Sharing some thoughts on longevity at the event were, from left, Blanca Guzman (10 years), Housing and Dining Services at University Village; Bob Cole (15 years), Cal Performances; Marcelle Baxter; Betty Walker (25 years), Career Center; and Tito Gatchalian (30 years), Electronics Research Laboratory. A host of campus officials paid tribute to honorees at the Pauley Ballroom luncheon. Among them was Vice Provost Christina Maslach, who called staff “the heart and soul of the progress we make as a campus.”
