Key UPTE vote slated for next month
Between Feb. 11 and March 3, approximately 2,000 administrative professional staff at Berkeley will be asked to vote in a systemwide election to determine whether or not they will be exclusively represented by the Union of Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), which is affiliated with the Communication Workers of America. Some 10,000 employees across all UC locations will be voting, and the election will be decided by a majority of those who vote.

UC encourages all employees to learn about the issues and to vote. Information about the election, including which job titles are included, typical dues and fees for represented employees, and key dates in the election schedule, is posted at hrweb.berkeley.edu/labor/apelection.htm.

Internal search under way for IAS dean
UC Berkeley seeks a Dean of International and Area Studies (IAS) for appointment effective July 1, 2004. This search is restricted to tenured members of the Berkeley faculty.

The mission of the dean of IAS is to promote, advance, and sustain Berkeley’s prominent position in global studies. The dean provides intellectual and programmatic leadership in a broad range of activities focused on international affairs. These include coordination and promotion of four institutes and 12 centers devoted to international and area studies, as well as oversight of instructional programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The position also includes coordination of international service programs, including overseas study and outreach. The dean plays a leading role in fundraising for International and Area Studies, in Berkeley’s relations with foreign institutions and visitors, and in advising the chancellor on international issues.

Applicants should have academic and research records of distinction in international or area studies, and evidence of administrative and fundraising experience. Nominations and applications with full résumé and the names of at least three references should be submitted by March 1 to Chair, IAS Dean Search Committee, University of California, Berkeley, 109 California Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-1500. Electronic submissions should be sent to iasdeansearch@berkeley.edu

For the record . . .
The Feb. 5 Academic Senate forum on faculty equity and diversity will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. — not 4 to 5 p.m., as cited in last week’s Berkeleyan. The location remains Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel Engineering Center.

In an article last week about the Mellon Faculty Institute for Undergraduate Research, we misidentified a course taught by Assistant Professor Ingrid Seyer-Ochi. The correct title of Education 40 is “Experiencing Education: Diversity and (In)Equality In and Beyond Schools.”

Finally, in last week’s article about field work undertaken by graduate students in the School of Social Welfare, we referred erroneously to “the late Representative Ron Dellums.” Dellums, of course, lives on, and we regret the error.
