Cal athletes set off medal detectors

The 2004 Summer Olympics concluded this past Sunday, August 29. Sports enthusiasts in the campus community can take pride in the achievements of its athletes and alums who won a total of 17 medals. The 2004 Cal Olympic medalists, with their times and the national teams on which they competed, include these:

100-meter backstroke (1:00.37), Gold
800-meter freestyle relay (7:53.42 WR), Gold
400-meter freestyle relay (3:36.39), Silver
400-meter medley relay (3:59.12), Silver
100-meter freestyle (54.40), Bronze

Pete Cipollone (USA), Rowing
Men’s Eight (5:42.48), Gold
Joy Fawcett (USA), Soccer, Gold

Haley Cope (USA), Swimming
400-meter medley relay (3:59.12, swam preliminary heat), Silver

Duje Draganja (Croatia), Swimming
50-meter freestyle (21.94), Silver

Jake Wetzel (Canada), Rowing
