UCTV’s October schedule features programs of interest to voters

UCTV — the University of California’s broadcast and on-demand video outlet — will present a raft of politically focused programming in October as the nation counts down the days until the Nov. 2 presidential election.

The central question for voters will be, “Does America Need a New President?” On Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 1:30 p.m., UCTV will broadcast a debate between Mark Danner, of the Graduate School of Journalism, and William Kristol, editor of the Washington-based political magazine The Weekly Standard and co-author of The War Over Iraq. Orville Schell, dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, moderates the debate (which takes place in real time on Monday, Oct. 4, in Zellerbach Hall).

Following the Danner/Kristol debate, UCTV will air “Decision 2004: The Issues — Terrorism and National Security” at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12. Presented by the Institute of Governmental Studies’ Center on Politics, the discussion features Michael Nacht, dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy, and John Yoo, Professor of Law at Boalt Hall and legal adviser to the Bush administration. Harry Kreisler, executive director of the Institute of International Studies, moderates the conversation. “Bush Science,” a discussion of the current administration’s science policies, will feature David Baltimore, Kurt Gottfried, Bruce Buckheit, and Andrew Eller. Michael Pollan, from the journalism faculty, will moderate. The program airs at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, and repeats at various times on several days following.

Another in the IGS “Decision 2004” series of politically themed discussions is “Values and Social Issues,” a panel discussion featuring Boalt’s Kristin Luker and Doug Strand, project director of the Public Agendas and Citizen Engagement Survey at the Survey Research Center. The program airs at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Former Democratic senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart discusses “National Security in the Age of Terror” in a program moderated by Dean Nacht of the Goldman School. Hart co-chaired the U.S. Commission on National Security for the 21st Century, a group that warned of the likelihood of significant attacks on American soil before September 11. The program, taped on campus on Sept. 21, airs at noon on Monday, Oct. 25.

A number of programs from Harry Kreisler’s “Conversations with History” series will be presented in October. Those include “Grand Strategy and American Triumphalism,” with foreign-policy analyst Sherle Schwenninger, on Oct. 2; “The United Nations After 9/11,” with Sir Brian Urquhart, on Oct. 9; and “Militant Islam, with Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum, on Oct. 16. The series airs on Saturdays at 4 p.m.

On a lighter yet still heady note, the “Lunch Poems: Kick Off” sessions for both 2003 and 2004 will be broadcast this month on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. The annual event features members of Berkeley’s faculty and staff reading favorite poems to usher in the popular campus series.
