ASUC Art Studio offers summer courses in multiple media

Donaldo Osorio, whose work is pictured above, has spent more than a decade mastering the art of woodcarving, which he studied in the highlands of Honduras and at an institute for professional artisans. His decorative and functional wooden objects are on display in that country's National Cathedral, San Francisco's Painter's Place Studio, and private collections in the Bay Area. Beginning Saturday, July 8, Osorio will teach a six-week, hands-on class on the fundamentals of this ancient art, at the ASUC Art Studio.

Also on the studio's bulging summer schedule (from June 1 to Aug. 18) are a new workshop on cartonería, or Mexican papier mâché sculpture (Wednesday evenings for six weeks, beginning July 5), taught by Oakland artist Rubén Guzmán, who learned that vibrant folk art in Mexico City from the internationally renowed Linares family. Painters will have a chance to work in "plein air" at UC's Blake Garden, in Kensington (Friday afternoons, beginning July 7), while writers, artists, and photographers can get the inside scoop on "Getting Published Today" in a one-day workshop (Saturday, Aug. 5) led by Alan Rinzler, executive editor of Jossey-Bass Publishers/John Wiley & Sons.

Summer classes in videography, web design, knitting, sewing, and ceramics - the latter including a day-long pit firing on Aug. 8, on Marin County's Dillon Beach - are also available. See asucartstudio.org for course descriptions, instructor biographies, and online enrollment.
