Turf restoration to close Memorial Glade

A large portion of Memorial Glade will be closed for much of the fall semester to allow restoration of the area’s soil and grass. Preliminary work has already begun, and temporary fencing will go up following Student Homecoming events scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1. Repairs to soil levels and the lawn will begin soon thereafter. Fencing is expected to be up through November to allow for complete restoration of the turf. During restoration, a section on the south side of Memorial Glade will remain accessible for activities.

Watch the veep debate at IGS

Berkeley students will gather at the Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) tonight to watch the debate between vice-presidential candidates Sen. Joseph Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin. The IGS event is co-sponsored by two student groups: Berkeley College Republicans and Cal Berkeley Democrats.

An hour before the debate begins, a panel of political experts will discuss the role of debates in campaigns. The Berkeley panelists will include David Karol, assistant professor of political science, and Jack Citrin, professor of political science.

The panel discussion will run from 5 to 6 p.m; the debate watch will occur from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the IGS library, 109 Moses Hall. IGS will also sponsor debate-watch events the evenings of the second and third presidential candidates’ debates on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the same times and location.

For the record . . .

A photo caption in our last issue misidentified a member of the bluegrass band the Wronglers, which played at an outdoor music event on campus on Saturday, Sept. 13. The musician identified as Berkeley physics chair Frances Hellman, wife of Wronglers banjoist/vocalist Warren Hellman, is in fact Hellman’s wife, Chris. Frances Hellman, his daughter, was not pictured. We regret the error.
