IST forum targets users of soon-to-retire Socrates and Arachne

Information Services and Tech-nology is hosting a user forum next week to outline plans to retire the Socrates and Arachne and UNIX Web servers. The forum will present solutions and migration options, which will be particularly relevant to Web customers. The forum will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. in Sibley Auditorium, Bechtel, and is open to all interested parties.

The forum will present Web-hosting alternatives for current Socrates and Arachne users, including both IST’s in-house services and a new, affordable Web-hosting solution from an external service provider. Other topics of discussion include statistical packages, the elimination of Pine e-mail accounts on Socrates, and UNIX-support alternatives.

Socrates and Arachne are general-purpose UNIX and Web-hosting servers that have been operated by IST for more than a decade. Due to the servers’ aging infrastructure, IST will retire them on Dec. 19. Working with a campuswide advisory group, IST hosted two forums earlier this year to solicit feedback from Socrates and Arachne customers.

UC assessment of wildfire risk to homes is available in Spanish

To assess the risk of wildfire damage to their houses and communities, Spanish-speaking homeowners can use a new interactive website designed by Berkeley fire researchers.

By answering questions about their homes’ construction and landscaping on a Spanish-language questionnaire at firecenter.berkeley.edu, respondents get a science-based assessment of their houses’ vulnerability to wildfire and suggestions for reducing their risk. The same tool is also available on the site in English.

University of California Press will sell hundreds of new and slightly scuffed books from its warehouse at a significant discount on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prices are $5 for paperbacks and $10 for hardbacks, with a few exceptions for art books and oversize editions. The sale will be held in front of the UC Press offices at 2120 Berkeley Way (one block north of University Avenue, between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue). Rain reschedules.

For the record ...

In last week’s feature about the new book It Came From Berkeley, an incorrect URL was provided for the author’s website. The correct URL is www.davidsweinstein.com. We regret the error.
