Berkeleyan returns on June 11

This is the last issue of the Berkeleyan for five weeks; we'll return on June 11 before retiring our quills for the summer. Meanwhile, keep up with campus news and events online on the UC Berkeley NewsCenter and the campus calendar.

Economist Saez wins prestigious Clark Medal

Professor of Economics Emmanuel Saez, a leading scholar of tax policy and the distribution of income and wealth, is the latest recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded by the American Economics Association to the U.S. economist under 40 making the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.

Saez, 36, joins four other Berkeley economists who have received the prize: Dale Jorgenson in 1971, Daniel McFadden in 1975, David Card in 1995, and Matthew Rabin in 2001. McFadden, like several other Clark Medal winners, also won the Nobel Prize in economics.

Staff advisors to regents encourage feedback

The website of the staff advisors to the UC Board of Regents has been updated, with a new feature, "What's on Your Mind?" designed to transmit concerns, comments, and ideas to the staff advisor and staff advisor-designate. Visit the website at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/staffadvisors.

The current staff advisors, Bill Johansen from LBNL and Edward Abeyta from UCSD Extension, will be on campus on Thursday, May 13, to participate in an hour-long forum on staff issues sponsored by Associate Vice Chancellor Steve Lustig and the Council of Staff Organizations. The forum, from noon to 1 p.m., will take place in the Section Club Room on the first floor of the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. The advisors will also attend that afternoon's Summerfest staff-appreciation event.

Community to discuss Anna Head student-housing

Development of the Anna Head parking-lot site (between Channing Way and Haste Street, just east of Telegraph) for student housing has been under consideration for a long time. The city of Berkeley's Southside Plan identifies the site for student housing, a use consistent with the campus's 2020 Long Range Development Plan. Though the historic Anna Head structure is not included in the housing proposal, a conceptual master plan for the entire site has been completed and will be publicly presented at a Monday, May 11, community meeting in the all-purpose room of the Unit 1 Residence Hall complex, on Channing Way between College Avenue and Bowditch Street; the meeting will run from 7 to 9 p.m.

Questions and written comments may be directed in advance to Beth Piatnitza (643-2082).

Two women are chancellorial selections at Davis, UCSF

UC President Mark Yudof was expected to bring the names of two candidates to serve as chancellors of UC Davis and UC San Francisco to this week's meeting of the UC Board of Regents. Both appointments are subject to regental approval and would take effect this summer.

Yudof's recommendation for chancellor of UCSF is Susan Desmond-Hellmann, a physician, cancer researcher, and biotechnology-industry executive who most recently served as president of product development for Genentech. For chancellor of UC Davis he is recommending Linda Katehi, currently provost of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignand an accomplished professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Desmond-Hellmann would replace J. Michael Bishop, who is stepping down after 10 years as UCSF chancellor. Katehi would replace Larry Vanderhoef, who will have served 15 years as UC Davis chancellor when he steps down this summer.
