U.S. News & World Report gives top marks to Cal, but journalism deans decry rankings mania. Professional Schools in Top Dozen
Cal's professional schools all received top 12 ranking in the most recent evaluations of U.S. News & World Report.

The March 18 issue listed the following rankings (previous ranking in parentheses):

  • Business, 10th (same)
  • Education, 4th (3rd)
  • Engineering, 3rd (2nd)
  • Journalism, tied for 9th (first evaluation)
  • Law, 12th (8th)

Journalism Dean Tom Goldstein joined the head of Stanford's journalism program in issuing a statement, prior to release of the rankings, that decried the magazine's surveys.

The most recent survey, according to Goldstein and Ted Glasser, "is bad news for higher education, a dismaying commentary on contemporary journalism, and sad news for us as journalism educators."
