Faculty obituaries

Media Relations makes every effort to write obituaries for UC Berkeley faculty members and to get them to reporters in a timely way. Please Contact Media Relations immediately if you have news of a faculty death.

What we'll need *

To write an obituary, we'll need:

  • Date, location and cause of death
  • Academic title
  • Birth date and birthplace
  • College degrees obtained
  • Date of hire at UC Berkeley and (if applicable) retirement date
  • Major accomplishments
  • Contact information for a few people who can be quoted about the academic contributions of the deceased
  • Titles and dates of major publications
  • Significant awards and honors
  • Contact information for a family member or someone on campus representing the family
  • Names and hometowns of the deceased's survivors
  • A high quality photo to accompany the obituary
  • Memorial service information
  • Where to send memorial donations
* PLEASE DON'T WAIT TO CONTACT MEDIA RELATIONS UNTIL YOU'VE GATHERED ALL THE INFORMATION ABOVE. We need to start writing the obituary as soon as possible and can add facts as we go along.

Staff and student obituaries

In general, Media Relations does not write staff or student obituaries. Volunteers typically provide the Berkeleyan with staff obituaries. For more information, contact the Berkeleyan editor. The Berkeleyan does not publish student obituaries.

Filing a 'Campus Death Report'

An online "campus death report" should also be filed for faculty, staff and student deaths so that key offices at UC Berkeley are alerted quickly. The report form can be accessed online. That page is part of a special campus Web site, "Guidelines for Responding to Death."
