Governer
Gray Davis has announced the creation of the California
Integrated Seismic Network, allocating $2.9 million to four California
institutions to coordinate and expand their earthquake monitoring and
tie them into the state's Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento.
The Berkeley
Seismological Laboratory is one of the institutions set to receive nearly
$750,000 this fiscal year, primarily to make its existing network more
robust in the event of an earthquake and to connect the network to Sacramento,
said UC Berkeley seismologist Lind Gee.
Though
the improvements won't be noticed on a day to day basis, "the benefit
will come during a large damaging earthquake with enhanced emergency
response," she said.

details, see the governor's
news release.
