Instructional issues related to Iraq
A memo from Chancellor Berdahl
The issues surrounding possible military action against Iraq are complex and of great concern to students, as well as faculty and staff. With the threat of war looming, some have asked for clarification of the professional responsibilities of University instructors during such events.
Berkeley's learning community fosters an environment that respects the right of individuals to express differing points of view. Those expressions should not compromise the University's mission of education, research and public service. It is expected that all classes will continue to be convened, even in the event of military action.
As it is impossible to foresee how such events will influence the environment in which classes are taught, faculty are expected to use their own best judgment. Online resources are available to guide instructors in this respect. "Conflict with Iraq" is an online clearinghouse for information about the campus's efforts and policies to promote dialogue and learning in a climate of civility and tolerance. Among the many resources you'll find there are "Teaching in Difficult Times," which offers advice for instructors, and "Guidance for Difficult Times," which covers stress management, counseling and other services sponsored by University Health Services.
It is our collective responsibility to maintain an effective learning environment. Thus, every effort will be made to continue the regular operations of the University in the event of military action.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Berdahl
Chancellor
