The 8th International Biotech Summit: Biology at the Edge. This two-day conference at the University of California, Berkeley, will explore innovative science in the context of its utility in the business world.
The summit, produced by Connections Institute and hosted by the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3), is aimed at business leaders who use cutting-edge science to create business opportunities, and pioneering academics whose work places them at the interface between science and entrepreneurship.
Monday, May 10, 8:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., and Tuesday, May 11, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Featured speakers include renowned scientists, CEOs of successful start-ups and leaders of the venture capital and investment communities. Among them are:
* Peter Schultz, professor of chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute and director of The Genomics Institute at the Novartis Research Foundation. Schultz will deliver a Monday morning keynote address, "New Opportunities at the Interface of Chemistry and Biology."
* Jay Keasling, professor of chemical engineering at UC Berkeley and a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and QB3. He will discuss the new field of synthetic biology.
* Adam Arkin, assistant professor of bioengineering and chemistry at UC Berkeley and a researcher at LBNL and QB3, who will speak on computational biology.
* Paul Alivisatos, professor of chemistry at UC Berkeley and director of the Molecular Foundry at LBNL. His topic will be the interface between nanotechnology and biology, or nano-biology.
* M.R.C. Greenwood, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs of the University of California system. She will deliver a Monday morning keynote address, "The Research University and the Foundations of the Life Science Economy."
Beyond simply presenting the latest scientific breakthroughs, the summit will feature leaders of academic labs and early-stage companies who are pioneering the frontiers of applied biological science in synthetic biology and "artificial life," in silico biology, bioengineering and computational biology.
