UC Berkeley Point of View

What are you doing for Spring Break?

Although the long, rainy winter appears to be drawing to a close in the Bay Area, many Berkeley students say they are heading south to sunnier climes for the March 21-25 holiday. We talked to 11 students ... and Oski.

Go to the Point of View archive to see what students did during Spring Break last year, along with their responses to more serious questions.

Sonia Malek'I'm going to New York City with a friend. She knows people there who are going to show us around. It's my first time there so I'm pretty excited about doing all the tourist stuff.'
-Sonia Malek, first-year student (major undeclared). Hometown: Hayward, CA
Troy Sostillio'I wish I were going somewhere, but I'll just be here working, catching up on bills and school. I'm even having to turn down going to my mom's 50th birthday party in Montana because I have so much to do. I made her a nice DVD as a present though, with family photos from the last 50 years.'
-Troy Sostillio, third-year psychology major. Hometown: Tampa, FL

Ganesh Paranthaman'Some friends and I are going on a road trip to L.A. It's just for a holiday - I've never been there. We'll take Highway 1 down there, probably go to Disneyland, some clubs, definitely the beach.'
-Ganesh Paranthaman, third-year computational engineering science major. Hometown: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Crystal Brown 'I'm going to a friend's house in Palm Springs, and then to Las Vegas. We're just going to lay out by the pool and relax, go to some bars. In Vegas, we'll probably just go clubbing, because I don't like to gamble that much.'
-Crystal Brown, fourth-year communications major. Hometown: Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Katie Wilcox'The soccer team has the whole week off, so I'm camping in Yosemite for a few days, and then I'm going to Disneyland. That's about all.'
-Katie Wilcox, first-year student (major undeclared). Hometown: Sunnyvale, CA
Drew Glover'We [the football team] have the week off, too. I'm going camping on the beach in Santa Cruz for three or four days, then the rest of the time I'll be at home here with my family.'
-Drew Glover, first-year political science major. Hometown: Oakland, CA

George Datskos'I'm heading back home to Tennessee, to meet up with some good pals I haven't seen in a while. We're not doing anything special, just hanging out.'
-George Datskos, second-year industrial engineering and operations research major
Joy DeLeon'I'm driving to L.A. with some friends, we're planning to go to the beach, maybe do a little shopping. The idea is pretty much just to relax.'
-Joy DeLeon, third-year women's studies major. Hometown: Vallejo, CA

Monica Bland'I'll be doing research, nothing very fun. I have a bunch of books to read and papers to write, like on "Dictee," by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. But I will find some way to enjoy the weather while I'm reading.'
-Monica Bland, first-year Ph.D. student in English. Hometown: Tuskegee, AL
Erik Estrada'I got nothing planned because all my friends go to other schools and their break is the week after ours. I might go to Vegas, maybe L.A. I'll definitely be going clubbing in San Francisco. My friends and I have a promotion group, F.L.O.S.S. Entertainment - we book hip hop groups and dj's - and it's our one-year anniversary next week.'
-Erik Estrada, fourth-year political science major. Hometown: Pittsburg, CA

Jeff Fan'I'm going home to Southern California, hopefully to do some interviews for a summer internship as a risk analyst. Mostly I'm just going to rest and relax. I don't get to go home that often and I miss it. I haven't really found my home here except at church.'
-Jeff Fan, third-year computer science and business administration major. Hometown: Walnut, CA
OskiNewsCenter: What are you doing for spring break, Oski?
Oski: [Makes an "L" and a "V" with his white-gloved fingers.]
"You're going to Las Vegas?"
[Nods.]
"And you're going to gamble there? On the nickel slots?"
[Shakes his head no, vigorously.]
"Blackjack? Poker? Roulette?"
[More head-shaking. Oski shakes his fist and then quickly opens it.]
"You're going to play craps?"
[Oski makes a thumbs-up sign.]
"OK, well, good luck!"
