UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau remembers UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton, who died tragically in San Francisco on Saturday, June 24
BERKELEY – I am so shocked and saddened by the news of the death of Chancellor Denice Denton. This is a tragic loss to her family and friends, to the UC Santa Cruz community and to higher education. Denice and I began as chancellors in the UC system at about the same time and we became very good friends. She was an extraordinarily capable and imaginative educator, deeply committed to higher education and absolutely passionate about the importance of having an inclusive university community. I was always particularly impressed by her commitment to excellence and by how creative she was in her ideas on how to educate well. I join the entire Cal community in expressing our condolences to her family and in offering our support and deepest sympathy to all at UC Santa Cruz.
