Barrows Hall's concrete 'skin' undergoes testing, possible repairs

– The west and east ends of Barrows Hall are being tested for possible repairs to the exterior concrete, which was added to the building several years ago as part of seismic retrofit work.

Because of pockets of air in the building's concrete "skin," the surface is wearing unevenly, and if not repaired, over the long term pieces of concrete may break off and fall. These surface defects do not compromise the structure of the building, which remains safe with a seismic safety rating of Good.

Currently, a contractor is testing the exterior concrete to identify the areas that need repair. The testing includes tapping the exterior, which can be noisy for occupants, and marking areas for potential repair with chalk. The testing is expected to continue through the week of July 10.

Once the extent of necessary repairs is known, the project team will confirm a schedule and will share details about the method of repair. Although there is likely to be some disruption to those who work and study in Barrows, Capital Projects will work to minimize disruptions as much as possible.

Questions about the work at Barrows should be directed to Christine Shaff at Capital Projects, 643-4793.
