Seven Berkeley undergraduates win prestigious scholarships

– Every year, Berkeley undergraduates compete for and win prestigious regional and national scholarships to support their undergraduate and upcoming graduate studies, and this year is no exception.  This spring semester seven students learned their next academic steps will be generously supported, either as undergraduates or as graduate students.

The scholarship winners include:

  • Samuel Pittman (Interdisciplinary Studies, 2008) has been awarded the Beinecke Scholarship, which provides $32,000 toward graduate study to outstanding juniors in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
  • Anya Melyantsev (History, 2007) was awarded the English Speaking Union Scholarship, which provides $20,000 for graduate study at a British University.
  • Matthew Breindel (Physics and Molecular and Cell Biology, 2008), Laura Lagomarsino (Genetics and Plant Biology, 2008), and Stephanie Lam (Chemical Biology, 2007) were awarded the Goldwater Scholarship, which provides $7,500 per year to outstanding sophomores and juniors in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering.
  • Brittany Murlas (Economics and Interdisciplinary Studies, 2008) was awarded the Strauss Scholarship, which provides outstanding juniors $10,000 to realize a public service project.
  • Rachel Barge (Conservation and Resource Studies, 2008) was awarded the Udall Scholarship, which provides $5,000 per year to outstanding sophomores and juniors committed to environmental careers, tribal public policy, or careers in Native American and Alaska Native health care.

Students interested in researching these or any other externally funded merit-based scholarships should pay a visit to the campus' Scholarship Connection Office at 301B Campbell Hall (643-6929 or scholarships@learning.berkeley.edu). Generous advising and support is available, including informational workshops, feedback on applications, and mock interviews.
