WHAT
The official kickoff of The Campaign for Berkeley, an unprecedented fundraising drive by the University of California, Berkeley. The funds, to be raised over the next five years, will support UC Berkeley's role as the nation's preeminent public teaching and research university through scholarships, fellowships, professorships and increased support for instruction and research.

A special "Thanks to Berkeley" art installation - a 74-foot-long billboard of more than 400 black-and-white portraits of UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff and alumni - will be unveiled at the outdoor event. The California Straw Hat Band and UC Berkeley cheerleaders also will be on hand.

Prior to the kickoff, an opportunity for reporters to interview the chancellor about the campaign will be offered. An R.S.V.P. is required, see note below.

WHEN
The kickoff will run from noon-1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19.

WHERE
Dwinelle Plaza, near the center of campus. See the UC Berkeley campus map.

WHO
UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau is the main speaker. Vice Chancellor for University Relations Scott Biddy also will participate.

After the art installation is unveiled, select faculty members and students who were photographed for the billboard will read short statements about the impact of UC Berkeley on their lives.

DETAILS
Chancellor Birgeneau will be available for interviews with credentialed print and broadcast reporters in California Hall between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., just prior to the kickoff. To R.S.V.P., contact Kathleen Maclay at UC Berkeley Media Relations at (510) 643-5651 by Wednesday, Sept. 17.

For more information about The Campaign for Berkeley, contact José Rodríguez at UC Berkeley Development Communications, (510) 643-7123 or rodriguez@berkeley.edu.

A series of campaign-related events will take place on campus between Sept. 14 and 20. More details are online at the Campaign for Berkeley home page.
